He qualified from Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals in London and all of his training has been in London and the South East.
Mr Connell undertook research using minimal access surgery (key hole surgery), part of which involved treating fibroids with low power lasers, and treating heavy periods. His work is in Hospitals in and around Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells.
As well as his work as a general gynaecologist, he is a urogynaecologist and specialises in the management of prolapse, incontinence and vaginal surgery. He is a laparoscopic (key-hole) surgeon eg performing laparoscopic subtotal hysterectomies.
Rowan Connell has had a solid training in obstetrics and gynaecology as well as having areas of special interest. In his training he has gained considerable surgical experience and he has worked as a consultant in Kent since 2002. Before this he was a registrar in Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells Trust, Benenden Hospital and St Thomas’ Hospital in London.
He treats a wide range of gynaecological conditions and has special interests in Urogynaecology (the treatment of urinary incontinence and prolapse), the treatment of heavy periods and Minimal Access Surgery (keyhole surgery). Rowan Connell has had a solid training in obstetrics and gynaecology and has close contacts in Europe to keep “up to date”.
Mr Connell leads and shares the lead in the running of several services as a consultant in his present post. He has been the lead in setting up a laparoscopic subtotal hysterectomy (“day-case hysterectomy”) service in the private sector and the NHS.
He enjoys teaching and has set up and run several courses. Mr Connell has presented at national and international conferences on various topics.
He has published broadly around Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

Mr Connell was fantastic when I saw him towards the end of May. I have been struggling with symptoms of endometriosis for many years and have not been taken seriously by previous doctors. Dr Riches and Mr Connell are the first doctors who have taken my symptoms seriously and recognised the immense pain it is caused me. I saw Mr Connell first at Kingsnorth where he easily addressed the reason that I was there. In discussion he asked about a past procedure and we discussed growing incontinence. He was kind and enthusiastic with a plan about how I should proceed with HRT going forward and was keen to see my incontinence investigated and treated and included that on my GP letter. On my subsequent admission to KIMS (NHS) for hysteroscopy he also carried out a cystoscopy which would save me further investigation. I am so grateful for that. Throughout the process I was impressed that Mr Connell addressed my needs holistically as a post menopausal woman and was focused on me being active and energetic as I age. I was terrified about having a GA having seen so many people ill and sick after. He was kind and appropriate about that and in fact I was quickly asleep and woke up almost instantly after, alert and with no sickness - great anaesthetist too! I can only think that Mr Connell was gentle during the procedure as I had no pain after and did not need to take any analgesics. I was back at my home desk doing an hour of work that afternoon. The only comments I have is about having no post op consultation. I know there are so many small ops that time is not allocated to this and it would be an NHS expenditure that is often not needed. Maybe add some more detail in the letter for the patient might help? I am googling the findings and probably that will suffice.
Mr Connell was really helpful today and listened to everything I had to say. We spoke about the symptoms I was experiencing and the different routes I could go down. Mr Connell explained everything really well and helped me to understand what I need to do. This is the first time I have felt listened to by a doctor and would recommend anyone to see Mr Connell.

Mr Connell is extremely approachable. He explains everything in layman's terms and has no issue in repeating anything if you do not understand. He has a great bedside manner with a good sense of humour, which makes you feel at ease - perhaps he should train other doctors and consultants! I could not fault the care I received at the KIMS Hospital and would definitely recommend them. The pre op assessment was very thorough and I was seen by the anaesthetist and surgeon prior to my procedure. The nurse in recovery was lovely. My room was comfortable the only down was it lacked a view as the window had frosted glass. I was not rushed to go home and was able to take my time to recover from the anaesthesia which made me very sleepy.
I saw Mr Connell at KIMS as a self funding private patient. He is the most charming man who listens to you and makes you feel really relaxed. He went through all my options regarding my prolapse explaining everything in great detail. He knows me as many years ago we worked at the same NHS hospital and knew my personal circumstances of being a full time carer for my partner. He was friendly and listened to my medical history regarding incontinence problems and why I had got to the stage I have and what could be done to help me. What a great Doctor. Immediately put me at ease. during a consultation which I had not been looking forward to! The initial assessment went really well and he really understood my issue, he listened and explained everything that was going to happen. I was told I'd get an appointment 8-12 weeks time but got one in 2 weeks! On the day everything went smoothly, the staff were so attentive in the whole of KIMS and Mr Connell came to see me to check I was ok and had any questions. The operation was a success and I am in no pain and have minimum bleeding. Overall a great experience.

I had my procedure on the 9th July and I can't speak highly enough of the care I received. Having had two previous laparoscopies to treat endometriosis, I was pretty sure the symptoms I was having were as a result/bi-product of endometriosis, even though I had gone through the menopause. My GP was adamant it wasn't possible that it was related and after 12 months of various tests, consultations, etc, I finally managed to get him to refer me to the Benenden. How fortunate for me that I was referred to Mr Connell, who, once I explained my symptoms, immediately reassured me that it was quite likely that the symptoms were linked to my past history. All the options were presented, including the removal of my ovaries and fallopian tubes and the fitting of an IUS, as well as HRT and having been given all the necessary information, I was told not to make the decision until the day of the procedure, to ensure that I had considered everything carefully. My care from the whole team was fantastic. I saw Mr Connell prior to the procedure and again the following day, as I was kept in overnight. Mr Connell is very professional, with a dry sense of humour, but comes across as being very caring of his patients, ensuring everything is understood and that you, as the patient, are happy with the course of action being taken. I never once felt pressurised, it was always my decision and there was always an opportunity to ask questions. I would definitely recommend anyone in need of gynaecological care to be referred to Mr Connell.
